Climate mitigation
Agrobiodiversity advances climate mitigation by increasing carbon sequestration in soils and biomass, cutting emissions associated with monocultures, and supporting sustainable land-use. Diverse rotations, cover crops, and agroforestry build soil organic matter, improve structure and infiltration, and enhance biodiversity, all of which lower net greenhouse gases over time. Integrating perennial and native species adds long-lived carbon pools and reduces input needs. Better nutrient management, residue retention, and reduced tillage complement these effects within diversified systems.
